Future Skills

Four Skill must learn by Management students to be ready for the future workforce.

Are your ready with it? If not, Join us..

To stay competitive in our careers, we must not only learn how do our jobs well today, but be prepared for how we’ll be doing our jobs well in two, five, ten years from now.

So, what skills and experience will be most important in the next two, five, 10 years? Based on industry trends and where technology is headed, here’s our four managerial skills that employers will want to see in every management student:

a. Emotional Intelligence

The technical skills that helped secure your first promotion might not guarantee your next. If you aspire to be in a leadership role, there’s an emotional element you need to consider. It’s what helps you successfully coach teams, manage stress, deliver feedback, and collaborate with others. It’s called emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence is typically broken down into four core competencies:

  • Self-awareness
  • Self-management
  • Social awareness
  • Relationship management

Why emotional intelligence matters:

Leaders set the tone of their organization. If they lack emotional intelligence, it could have more far-reaching consequences, resulting in lower employee engagement and a higher turnover rate.

While you might excel at your job technically, if you can’t effectively communicate with your team or collaborate with others, those technical skills will get overlooked.

b. Adaptability

Because of technological advances (IoT), shifts in society (remote working), and the many unknowns of the future (AI), project managers need to be open to new ideas, flexible to pivot with changing times, and ready to adapt to change.

But, that’s nothing new, right? Managers have always been masters of adaptation. When things shift, the manager is almost always the first to respond. They’re ready to adjust plans and expectations and are constantly watching for pitfalls and risks on the horizon.

So, you already have an advantage over other knowledge workers. The key is to continue to use those adaptation skills to seek out new learning opportunities, whether that’s through an online course, reading a book, or volunteering for a new project at work, as well as being aware of changes on the horizon.

c. Working with and Managing Remote Teams

Working remotely and with dispersed, international teams is on the rise, and employers will be looking for project managers who have experience successfully working from home, as well as managing a remote team.

If you’ve worked remotely, you know there’s a learning curve.

Hiring managers at remote companies are looking for candidates who can communicate verbally and in writing, have an independent streak, and have a track record of successfully managing their own projects.

d. Data Science Expertise

Data scientists are big data wranglers, gathering and analyzing large sets of structured and unstructured data. A data scientist’s role combines computer science, statistics, and mathematics. They analyze, process, and model data then interpret the results to create actionable plans for companies and other organizations.

Data scientists are analytical experts who utilize their skills in both technology and social science to find trends and manage data. They use industry knowledge, contextual understanding, skepticism of existing assumptions – to uncover solutions to business challenges.

A data scientist’s work typically involves making sense of messy, unstructured data, from sources such as smart devices, social media feeds, and emails that don’t neatly fit into a database.

Technical skills are not the only thing that matters, however. Data scientists often exist in business settings and are charged with communicating complex ideas and making data-driven organizational decisions. As a result, it is highly important for them to be effective communicators, leaders and team members as well as high-level analytical thinkers.

Experienced data scientists and data managers are tasked with developing a company’s best practices, from cleaning to processing and storing data. They work cross functionally with other teams throughout their organization, such as marketing, customer success, and operations. They are highly sought after in today’s data and tech heavy economy, and their salaries and job growth clearly reflect that.

Project Based Learning

Project based learning is a USP of DBS, adopted since inception. Curricular content across different subjects is integrated into a project and students work as a group of 4-6 targeting the objective and developing the most appropriate strategies and actions to achieve the project outcome. To make the students understand the volatility of the business environment, the project dynamics are changed mid-way through the project, forcing the groups to huddle, discuss the impact and rework their strategies to sustain growth and counter competition. They understand the impact of adopting different strategies on business performance and thereby develop an instinct to analyse the outcomes of different actions.

  • PUBLIC SPEAKING CLUB ACTIVITIES

    Activity 1:

A very interactive day well spent on the first session of "Public Speaking" on 22nd August'19. It was a unique introductory session. We met our Club Patrons, Dr. Randhir Dalal, Ms. Richa Soni, Ms. Anushree Sharma, Mr. Lalit Kumar & Mr. Mohit Saini.

    • Student performing "Impressive Introductions" task

    • Mentors going a performance analysis

When the session began, we were instructed to introduce ourselves as we all were unknown to each other, so to become comfortable and familiar to the each of the individual who are the part of the club, our mentor organized a very interesting activity. The task was named as ''Impressive Introductions"' .The task was to introduce ourselves in a different and unique way. It could be a poetry, song, quote, humor or anything else which can describe ourselves that what kind of being we are. So, to make the task more understandable, first our club coordinators introduced themselves in their own unique way. Afterwards, all the club members came one by one to introduce themselves. Some of them spoke poetry, whereas some of them disclosed their strengths and weaknesses. Some of them were confident enough to face the audience, and some of them were little bit nervous to face the audience. The idea behind the activity was to reduce stage fear & be confident enough to introduce oneself in a public platform.

Before the session got over, our next activity was announced along with dates with mutual unison of students. We were motivated to work hard on our speaking skills.

Keeping this in mind, the Public Speaking Club organised a group activity named ‘The Flag Bearers’ on August 31, 2019. In all 4 groups participated, each with 6-10 members. Every group came up with a logo and a catchy name describing the uniqueness of this club and explained the importance of effective public speaking through a role play. The first group headed by Debojeet presented a Club Anthem titled ‘Wield the power of words.’ The members Anubhav, Varnika, Divyanshi, Harshashree, Priyali, Srudeep and Vignesh suggested ‘Invictus Oratory Club’. The second group lead by Manni came up with the idea ‘Let speech be better than silence’ and the members including Sumit and Ridhima shared some real experiences to explain why one needs to conquer the fear of speaking. The other group with Abhijit as the leader suggested ‘Talking Titans’ as the club name and the group consisting Mahima, Kopal, Mahua, Manish, Adnan and Faizan staged a wonderful role play. The fourth group with Saransh, Shivani, Deepak, Aryan, Shweta, Sumit Prakash and the leader Sagar proposed ‘Lead to speak’ as the club name. Finally the activity, full of creative ideas, concluded with some enlightening words by the patrons Dr. Dalal, Ms. Richa Soni & Ms. Anushree Sharma.

    • Students during Trio Debate

On Thursday, 19th September 2019, a Trio Debate session debate took place in the Old Auditorium of the school on the motion, Western Culture Vs Indian Culture. The controversial topic took several turns as the fierce members of the club put forward their opinions supporting either of the side. Three teams participated in total, each consisted of three participants.

The first group included Sajal, Samarth and Vinit who left no chance to tackle each other in a verbal war of perceptions and strong arguments. They covered the influencing aspects of Clothing, Education and Family.

Another group stepped up, comprising of Varnika, Debojeet and Arunachalam. While, the former two supported the Western culture in the aspects of Women's safety, Crime level and Foreign education; the latter didn't blink an eye as he passionately defended the Indian culture and brought out the colors of its influence and the set forth the grandeur it holds.

The last team sat across the already fired up table to take the debate to its final conclusion. The team consisted of Abhijit, Kopal and Aryan who went around analyzing both the cultures and how the either have influenced each other over the centuries.

The debate met its end as everybody agreed that there is a bicultural influence between the West and India and that both sides have merits and demerits. So, in order to establish a better society, the positives should be inherited while distancing from the dark negatives.

  • THE BAGPACKERS

The purpose of the club is to gather the like minded students and faculty members of Doon Business School. The club aims to provide opportunities to explore various cultures and picturesque Himalayas of Uttarakhand and Himachal. In today’s world of chaos and constant stimulation, it’s hard to quiet the mind and think. Getting into Nature offers a way to find some silence and clarity; and it’s an important tool to counter our standards of survival in society. The more and more pressure we put on ourselves, the more our health degrades.

    Naag Tibba Trek

    Rishikesh Camping and River Rafting

Our minds and bodies need silence in order to regenerate. Travelling is a great way to reap the benefits of what nature has to offer. The elements whip us into shape and we sweat out our frustrations. As our muscles scream for mercy and our toes rub in our boots, we seek shade. The shelter of a giant pine tree is a luxurious refuge from the intense sun rays. Leaning against the rugged bark, the ultimate question surfaces: Why did I choose to do this? Sometimes the fatigue from everyday life tries to dissuade us from getting outdoors; but in the end, the rewards of trekking unknown paths are too great. Hiking is a way for nature to give us some much needed therapy; and depending on where we go, it’s affordable.

The DBS Movie Club is trying its best, to make its presence felt by living upto the standards, it had committed. Although in the first month of screening, we have chosen films which are from popular or somewhat popular genre, but we intend to eventually screen movies, which has an intellectual essence. We premiered with, an out and out comedy film called "BOWFINGER" starring Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin but it was followed by a very intense movie by noted director, James Cameroon called “The Abyss”. Changing the mood we switched to Horror by screening the all time favourite “The Exorcist” last week. We did have certain concerns regarding the venue for the screening of the movies. Till now we are getting a rather baffled response especially when we screen a lesser known film but since our goal is to promote quality films, I am sure our persistent efforts would certainly pay off by encouraging and instilling, a good film sense amongst the students. We have a number of good films lined up for the coming months, Madhu madam has already sent you a list films to be screened from various genres on specific days. We aim not just to involve our students but also help them evolve.

National Conference

About the Conference

Sustainable livelihood is a top priority for the nation today. Over half the country’s working population is employed in agriculture and a sustained as well as steady growth in rural incomes is critical for a positive ripple impact on the manufacturing and services economies of the nation.

Today, India is self-suffcient in respect of demand for food, and is also a net exporter of agri-products but still agricultural growth is not keeping pace with the growth in other economic sectors. Economic indicators do not show equitable and egalitarian growth in income of the farmers. The human factor behind agriculture, the farmers, remain in frequent distress, despite higher productivity and production. It is with this backdrop that the Government of India has set a policy target of doubling farmers’ income by 2022. The paradigm shift from production to income has implications in evolving strategies, identifying options and exploring innovative institutional mechanisms. It requires complete revamping and re-orientation of agri-food system, and strengthening of infrastructure and institutions in terms of new production systems, and farmers’ access to remunerative markets, credit, inputs, information and technologies.

Doubling Farmers’ Income through various credit and non-credit interventions involving all the stakeholders is a big challenge. Dynamics of these approaches for doubling farmers' income would revolve around reducing cost of production through technological changes, innovations and well planned market strategies to improve margin of profit, insulating against risks by insurance and landless allied activities to compliment the farmers’ income. This calls for a national dialogue to discuss all the issues for developing a well framed roadmap to boost agricultural productivity and to increase farmers’ income by switching to high value agriculture and diversifying to allied and non-farm activities. There is also need for framing policies focusing on allied activities through skill development programme and disseminating technology to the farmers. It requires a new strategy at the national level and implementation plans at the ground level.

Seminar Themes

The main themes of the Conference are:
  • Improvement in crop productivity.
  • Leveraging water resources for enhancing farm income.
  • Cost minimizing mechanisms and improve production efficiency.
  • Promoting agricultural diversification towards more remunerative commodities, such as horticulture, livestock and fisheries.
  • Climate adaptation and mitigation in agriculture.
  • Dry-land and low input agriculture.
  • Promoting of post-harvest protection of grain, cereals, pulses & oilseeds.
  • Community farm management to take advantage of economies of scale and sharing risk.
  • Institutional convergence for synergetic effect on farm effciency, profitability and Farmers' right.
  • Emerging options for rural entrepreneurship development like Skill India, Start Up, ARYA, Student READY etc. and Digital empowerment.
  • Crop insurance and agricultural processing industry.
  • Strengthening of value chains, packaging and branding.
  • Agribusiness and market reforms.
  • Switching to job opportunities outside agriculture sector.
  • SHG and cooperatives.
  • Policy issues related to credit and infrastructure support, risk management, marketing, etc.

About Dehradun

Dehradun is a calm and beautiful city on the foothills of Himalayas. The most striking feature you will find would be - Moderation. Not only it's one of the greenest cities of India; in both behavior of people and of mother nature, you will be awestruck by the strength and continuity of moderation. Perhaps that's why it has always been an Edcuation Hub, right from the times of ancient epic Mahabharata.

It's a fast emerging Industrial Hub also, which will enable Dehradun to absorb most of the young educated people from the region and outside.

The most sought after Hill Stations and Pilgrimage centers of Mussoorie (Queen of Hill Stations), Nainital, Rishikesh and Haridwar are less than about 3 hours by road.

About DBS School of Agriculture & Allied Sciences

DBS with integrated mandate of higher education started its journey about a decade back, in 2007. The DBS provides courses primarily in the areas of Business Management, Agricultural Management and Mass Communication, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Later on, considering the research, extension and educational needs in the agriculture sector of the state, DBS curved out the School of Agriculture and Allied Sciences. Agribusiness is the world’s oldest, largest, and most important industry. It is the business that enables the world to grow, trade, and feed everyone utilising the Earth’s finite resources. Today agribusiness has an image problem. The wider urbanised public perceive agriculture as ‘just farming’, just raising livestock and growing crops. Yet, agribusiness is a complex system involving a whole constellation of activities and supporting businesses that move food and fibre from where it is produced to where it is consumed. Societal expectations about the methods of production increasingly impact the industry. Agribusiness and agriculture are too important to ignore; and both are far too important for partisanship, the rising multi-lateral problems to society demand unity of purpose and action. DBS through agribusiness education in the Faculty of Agriculture, provides post-graduates capable of competition on local and international levels. The mission of the DBS School of Agriculture and Allied Sciences is to strive ahead and provide leadership in teaching, research and extension services related to agriculture and allied sciences. The institute endeavours to keep pace with new frontiers of science and contemporary development to be socially and technically relevant.

DBS provides a wholesome campus experience, where classroom learning is one part and experiential learning is another. Extracurricular activities and fun are equally important parts as well. When students with different viewpoints, different cultural and educational backgrounds come together, and the strong supporting structure (of faculty members) and fertile ground (of opportunities provided by DBS) are provided, Magic is created…
