About the Conference

Sustainable livelihood is a top priority for the nation today. Over half the country’s working population is employed in agriculture and a sustained as well as steady growth in rural incomes is critical for a positive ripple impact on the manufacturing and services economies of the nation.

Today, India is self-suffcient in respect of demand for food, and is also a net exporter of agri-products but still agricultural growth is not keeping pace with the growth in other economic sectors. Economic indicators do not show equitable and egalitarian growth in income of the farmers. The human factor behind agriculture, the farmers, remain in frequent distress, despite higher productivity and production. It is with this backdrop that the Government of India has set a policy target of doubling farmers’ income by 2022. The paradigm shift from production to income has implications in evolving strategies, identifying options and exploring innovative institutional mechanisms. It requires complete revamping and re-orientation of agri-food system, and strengthening of infrastructure and institutions in terms of new production systems, and farmers’ access to remunerative markets, credit, inputs, information and technologies.

Doubling Farmers’ Income through various credit and non-credit interventions involving all the stakeholders is a big challenge. Dynamics of these approaches for doubling farmers' income would revolve around reducing cost of production through technological changes, innovations and well planned market strategies to improve margin of profit, insulating against risks by insurance and landless allied activities to compliment the farmers’ income. This calls for a national dialogue to discuss all the issues for developing a well framed roadmap to boost agricultural productivity and to increase farmers’ income by switching to high value agriculture and diversifying to allied and non-farm activities. There is also need for framing policies focusing on allied activities through skill development programme and disseminating technology to the farmers. It requires a new strategy at the national level and implementation plans at the ground level.

About DBS School of Agriculture & Allied Sciences

DBS with integrated mandate of higher education started its journey about a decade back, in 2007. The DBS provides courses primarily in the areas of Business Management, Agricultural Management and Mass Communication, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Later on, considering the research, extension and educational needs in the agriculture sector of the state, DBS curved out the School of Agriculture and Allied Sciences. Agribusiness is the world’s oldest, largest, and most important industry. It is the business that enables the world to grow, trade, and feed everyone utilising the Earth’s finite resources. Today agribusiness has an image problem. The wider urbanised public perceive agriculture as ‘just farming’, just raising livestock and growing crops. Yet, agribusiness is a complex system involving a whole constellation of activities and supporting businesses that move food and fibre from where it is produced to where it is consumed. Societal expectations about the methods of production increasingly impact the industry. Agribusiness and agriculture are too important to ignore; and both are far too important for partisanship, the rising multi-lateral problems to society demand unity of purpose and action. DBS through agribusiness education in the Faculty of Agriculture, provides post-graduates capable of competition on local and international levels. The mission of the DBS School of Agriculture and Allied Sciences is to strive ahead and provide leadership in teaching, research and extension services related to agriculture and allied sciences. The institute endeavours to keep pace with new frontiers of science and contemporary development to be socially and technically relevant.

DBS provides a wholesome campus experience, where classroom learning is one part and experiential learning is another. Extracurricular activities and fun are equally important parts as well. When students with different viewpoints, different cultural and educational backgrounds come together, and the strong supporting structure (of faculty members) and fertile ground (of opportunities provided by DBS) are provided, Magic is created…
